We are very excited to welcome new students into the Family Health Medical Programme. The information below which includes important dates and arrangements will help new students transition smoothly into the medical programme and University life. Please take some time to review the information below.

There are many things that you need to do before lectures begin. This check-list will guide you through them.

Orientation

Orientation for freshmen will take place at the Hall of Anatomy from Monday, 17th September to Friday, 21st September, 2018.

Medical Examination

All students are required to undergo compulsory medical examination and this must be completed before the end of September, 2018.

Matriculation

Matriculation will be held on Thursday, 22nd November, 2018 at the forecourt of the school.

What to Expect

Academic Year

The academic year is made up of two semesters of about 15 teaching weeks and two weeks of revision and a week of examination. Lectures usually start from 8am and end at about 5pm each day.

You are expected to be in class at least 10 mins before each class starts.In preparation for your life as a distinguished medical officer, you are required to dress decently at all times and obey all school regulations.

Your student’s handbook will give you more details.

International students

All international students who are required to obtain students’ permit should see the Asst. Registrar for guidelines.

Accommodation

The school provides comfortable accommodation for all students on a first come first served basis on condition that full payment of fees have been made. All students who desire for on campus accommodation should see the hostel mistress for further information..

Your IT Services

The IT Services available to you include:

• Internet access wireless.

• Printing services.

• The Student Portal (Detailed information will be provided once registration is complete).

• Email services.

• The Online Software.

• Live IT Support (Online chat service).

Take the New Student Survey

Fresh Student Survey. Tell us about your early Campus experiences in the Fresh Student Survey. This is an easy-to-complete online survey that gives you the chance to provide feedback about services and support at Family Health. Student feedback will help us to make improve on the support services provided to new students.
The survey is voluntary, confidential and only open to all students. A link will be sent to your email address in due course.

Security

The Family Health Medical School is a relatively safe environment. However students are strongly advised to use normal safety procedures, e.g:

• To report any suspicious person or activity to the Campus Security personnel.

• To secure all personal belongings.

• To make sure their rooms are locked before leaving hostel.
The Security Department operates 24/7 and personnel are posted in all areas of the Campus.

ID Cards

As a safety and security measure, all students are required to visibly wear Student ID Cards while on the premises of the Campus. Students will be refused entry to buildings on Campus including examination rooms if their ID card is not visibly worn. 

Information relating to the collection of ID cards and dates will be posted shortly.

Health & Wellness

All registered students are covered by a Student Medical Insurance plan from Metropolitan Health.  Medical attention for all registered students is provided through the Family Health Hospital located on Campus.

The Clinic offers you the ultimate in primary health care and helps you to maintain your health. The hospital works 24/7 and you must produce your Student ID/insurance card to receive attention. Information on the hospital can be found here.  The schedule of benefits is also available here. If you have a chronic illness that needs to be managed regularly, please talk to the chief medical director.

Life at the Family Health Medical School is an exciting, culturally diverse, transformative experience. Here, you get the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life with diverse cultures and experiences.

• Healthcare – provided by the Family Health Hospital

• Food – the Cafeteria offers delicious and healthy meals at affordable prices

• Academic Library- The Tim Johnson Library Complex is available for all your research needs.

• Counselling Services – Speak to the school Ambassador/Director of Student and Academic affairs/trained counselors concerning your professional and personal development.

• Students Helping Students – the student representative council are available to offer support to other students.
