History of Family Health University
Family Health University (FHU) began its journey long before it became a fully chartered university. Its story starts in 1997 in Accra, Ghana, with the establishment of a small diagnostic centre aimed at improving healthcare access for the local community. Over time, this centre grew in scope and reputation, eventually becoming Family Health Hospital, a facility known for quality patient care.
Building on its strong healthcare foundation, the institution later opened the Family Health Nursing and Midwifery School, training nurses and midwives with both academic instruction and hands-on clinical experience. Recognising the need for more highly trained doctors in Ghana and beyond, FHU went on to establish Ghana’s first private Medical School, giving students the opportunity to train as physicians while benefiting from direct clinical exposure at the university’s own hospital.
A major milestone came in 2024 when Family Health University was granted a Presidential Charter, making it one of the first private universities in Ghana with full authority to award its own degrees, diplomas, and certificates. This achievement marked a new era of autonomy and academic growth for the institution.
Today, FHU continues to expand its programmes in health sciences, combining rigorous education, mission-oriented research, and effective healthcare delivery, all while rooted in its original vision of improving human health across the region.
